Patrick Mertes

Production

My name is Patrick Mertes and I am 38 years old. My journey at ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centre Neuwied started in 2007 when I joined the company as an operator via a temporary employment agency. Some months later I was hired permanently. Since 2015 I have been working as a supervisor at the plant.

Why did you decide to join ArcelorMittal?

During my time as a temporary worker I quickly realised that ArcelorMittal was the right company for me. Above all, the team spirit and the interest of my manager in me as an individual convinced me.

How do you see your career progressing?

My goal is to become deputy production manager.

What do you like best about your job?

The diversity of the job. In my job, I am the contact person for technical problems, but also for personnel and personal issues. Every day holds new challenges

Do you find your position satisfying?

Yes! I have responsibility and the authority to make decisions. Finding my own solutions to the problems that arise is what makes the position so interesting. The range of tasks and constant developments on the production line also promotes my own development.

Describe a typical working day:

The day starts with the shift handover and the attendance check. After reading my emails, I go to the production hall where I check the production flow. I also check compliance with safety regulations for both internal and external personnel. And throughout the day, I am available as a contact person for my team.-Then there are a lot of unplanned situations that make the job so interesting.

Describe ArcelorMittal in a few words

After 15 years, it’s hard to describe it in a few words. But I would say it is more than a job to me. Colleagues become friends and you’re not just a number on a list.
