Laurence Sarazin, Production operator

Production

I joined ArcelorMittal in February 2017 as a temporary worker at the skin-pass mill and was internally hired in August 2017. I started at the north field on a line that consisted of flattening the sheet metal to arrive at the thickness requested by the customer. I started with strapping and finished with line driving. I arrived on the slitting line at the time of Covid.

Can you give us an overview of the day-to-day responsibilities of your position?

I am at the end of the process so I check if the product complies with the customer’s request. If there is a defect in the final material, I will consult my manager and see if the customer wants protection such as plastic film.

What are the biggest challenges you might face in your role?

My biggest challenge was to show men that I belonged among them. I have good problem-solving skills and an ability to take initiative. I’ve found ways to overcome these biases and gain the respect of the men I work with. I showed them my skills. I wasn’t afraid of failure when I joined a "male" environment; On the contrary, you have to go for it!

How do you feel as a woman in this industry?

I feel very good, in my place. I’ve been in the industry for 20 years. You still have to have a strong character and have patience.

How do you see ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres Europe demonstrating its commitment to supporting women’s professional growth and development?

We have various actions carried out to promote the steel industry in order to encourage women to join the company. These initiatives include hosting open days for middle and high school students to visit our sites. Additionally, I feel like there is a minimal pay gap between men and women, and there is no discrepancy in the rates of salary increases.

Any last words?

If you are a woman, join the industry, you belong as much as a man. Don’t let that intimidate you, you’ll be surprised at the things you’re able to do!
