Damian Szydło, Press shop manager

Production

I work at ArcelorMittal since 2006. I started as a planist at press shop and got the opportunity to take process engineer position. It was a milestone in my carrier path. I realised many different projects connected with production, quality and tooling.

In 2017, I started working on slitting department in Bytom, where I was responsible for technical issues on slitting lines and cut to length lines. I implemented width and length measurement systems and took care of the installation of rotary shear on D2 multiblanking line. This project had a significant impact to increasing line productivity.

In 2022, I started working as a Press shop Manager. At this time, it was the beginning of the launch of a new press. Currently we have 5 presses which we use for production parts dedicated for automotive market.

What motivated you to join ArcelorMittal Group?

I was proud to work in a global company. The directions and goals set by my supervisor motivated me to it. I worked hard to understand process, requirements, roles, which help me develop my skills and knowledge.
One of the biggest challenge which I met at the beginning my survey, was a production transfer from France to Poland. It was something new for me –first time project abroad, new tools, new steel grade, cooperation with customer to fulfill time schedule, tool modifications, operator trainings – it was a really a multitasking project. It was very stressful but successful time for me.

What are the biggest challenges someone might face in this role?

At work, I grew up with people from the press shop area. We are all getting along and working together efficiently. The day I became a supervisor my behavior had to change. It was a difficult challenge for me. I planned to be transparent with my team – in my opinion it was a clue. Now, I wan say that I managed it and I think I’m doing quite well.

Can you provide an overview of the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?

I’m responsible for 43 people in my team not only production area. I manage also safety, quality, maintenance, logistic on press shop department. It provides many different scenarios each day but we always focus on safety first. It is our daily routine.

How do you believe our company’s commitment to diversity positively impacts our workplace culture and overall success?

During each day I work with different people. In our teams we have great women, young people who are at the beginning of their professional career, colleagues with big experience – everyone is very open and ready to support. All of them are creating a good place to work.
