Justo Aguirretxe, Production Assistant
My name is Justo Aguirretxe, and I have been with ArcelorMittal for 40 years. I am currently based at the Legasa plant, where I serve as a Production Assistant. In this role, I am responsible for overseeing machine scheduling and team management to ensure optimal production efficiency and smooth operational workflow.
Can you share your career path within ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres?
I began my career at ArcelorMittal in Zalain, working in API and structural tubing. After four years, I transitioned to the Lesaka plant, where I worked in packaging for two years. I then moved into the galvanized division for five years, followed by four years in the ovens department. Ten years ago, I joined the Legasa plant as an assembler. Eight years ago, I was promoted to a managerial role, and for the past six years, I have held the position of Production Assistant.
Can you share an overview of how your day-to-day responsibilities?
My workday begins at 8 a.m., Monday through Thursday. My primary responsibility is to assess the machines and determine if new material needs to be scheduled for cutting. I also monitor the consumables and, if needed, place purchase orders to maintain a steady supply. On Fridays, my focus shifts to preparing the teams for the upcoming week to ensure production continues smoothly.
What were the key factors that motivated you to spend your career with ArcelorMittal Group?
I completed my FP2 studies in electronics and joined the company at 21 years old. Since then, the changes have been significant, particularly in the area of safety. There have been major improvements in employee safety protocols, ergonomics, crane usage, and other operational aspects. The work environment is much safer now, with far greater attention to these details than in the past. I believe the company is making a substantial effort to ensure these safety standards are consistently upheld.
What advice would you give to the next generation of professionals?
My advice to young people entering the industry is to prioritize safety. After an eight-hour shift, the most important thing is that everyone can go home safe and sound, without any incidents. I would also encourage them to foster a positive work environment. Building strong relationships with colleagues makes it easier to navigate challenges, and a good atmosphere leads to better collaboration.
For those pursuing a career, I strongly encourage you to consider the industry. It offers a safe working environment, job stability, and a promising long-term future. The industry is increasingly focused on sustainability, and we need fresh talent and new perspectives to drive progress. Your contributions will be vital to shaping the future of our company.
