My name is Daniel Fürst, I joined ArcelorMittal in 2022. I am working as a Key Account Manager and I am responsible for Automotive Sales in our German Market.
Can you provide an overview of the day-to-day responsibilities of this position?
An important aspect of a key account manager’s responsibility is building customer relationship. This involves identifying customer needs and the requirements of their business. I use this information to define solutions and development strategies helping our customers to achieve their goals. It is also important to identify new potential in existing markets. You need to be up to date on markets, strategies, technical developments in all different industries. This means you develop market strategies, analyze sales potentials and you need to be able to answer questions about products and processes all the time.
What are the biggest challenges someone might face in this role?
The ability to deal with rejection, because not every offer you discuss with your customer ends with success in the frame of a new contract. Sometimes it takes time to inspire customers and you need to be patient.
What key skills do you believe are essential for success in sales?
In addition to technical skills and general skills in business administration, soft skills also play an important role for this job. For example, you need to have a high level of flexibility in order to deal with many different customers. This also includes a strong sense of empathy in order to assess the customer’s needs. In addition, you should have a good level of analytical skills in order to increase sales and to develop sales strategies. The ability to inspire is the basis for this challenging job.
