Alfredo Ruiz de Azuaga, Workshop manager
I started working at ArcelorMittal when I was 19, and over nearly 36 years, I’ve held various positions, gaining experience in every role the company has to offer. Today, I’m proud to lead a team as the workshop manager at the Salvatierra plant, where safety and professional growth are our top priorities.
Hello, my name is Alfredo Ruiz de Azuaga, and I’ve been with ArcelorMittal at the Salvatierra plant for nearly 36 years.
Can you share your career path within ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centres?
I started working at ArcelorMittal when I was 19. Over the years, I’ve held various positions within the company, from operating the shears we had many years ago, to working with levellers, cutting machines, expeditions, and cranes. I’ve gained experience in every role the company has to offer, and eventually, I became the workshop manager. Today, I oversee a team of approximately 26 people, along with four maintenance workers.
Can you share an overview of your day-to-day responsibilities?
First thing in the morning, we start with a safety briefing for our employees, ensuring that everyone is focused on safety, which is our top priority at ArcelorMittal. We usually begin with an informative talk, addressing key safety topics, and then delve deeper into specific issues raised during that safety minute.
I make it a point to reiterate what we’ve been doing and emphasize its importance. Now that I’m more involved in managing the lines, my role includes supervising employees, transporters, and contractors. It’s a blend of day-to-day management and ensuring that our machines are programmed and operating efficiently. This is what a typical day at the company looks like.
What were the key factors that motivated you to spend your career with ArcelorMittal Group?
I’ve always been here and have never considered going anywhere else because this place truly drew me in. I’ve never felt the need to look elsewhere. In fact, I’m very happy with where I am. The balance I’ve found here, both personally and professionally, is incredibly positive for me.
What advice would you give to the next generation of professionals who are just starting their careers with us?
I strongly encourage young people to consider joining ArcelorMittal. This plant is not only extremely safe, but it’s also a place where experienced professionals like us choose to stay because of the excellent working environment. For the new generation looking to build a career, ArcelorMittal offers a supportive and professional atmosphere where safety is a top priority.
I wholeheartedly recommend it as a place where you can grow and thrive. It’s a fulfilling job, and we’re like one big family here. We’ve spent years building a strong community, and we are committed to teaching new employees the right way to do things. We look out for each other and ensure that everyone is well-prepared.
We believe in you and trust that you can achieve as much, if not more, than we have. So take the leap—this is a great opportunity, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
