Hand in Hand Towards the Energy Transition

September 2024

At ArcelorMittal Steel Service Center (SSC) in Neuwied, the installation project of a new photovoltaic system roof, in collaboration with ENVERIO, is finished.

This major project will help us achieve a significant milestone in our sustainability efforts, with an expected annual reduction of around 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions. Through a lease and electricity supply agreement with ArcelorMittal, ENVERIO is bringing this innovative concept to life, with iAccess handling the installation.

The system will be capable of reaching a peak output of 4,200 kilowatts, translating to approximately 4.1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity generated annually. This amount of energy could power more than 1,000 single-family homes each year. Not only is this energy output impressive, but the strategic direction of the project is also noteworthy. The electricity generated will be fed directly into our facilities, enabling us to supply over 50% of our own electricity needs. Any excess electricity not used will be fed into the public grid, for which we will be compensated.

For 25 years, ArcelorMittal Auto Processing Deutschland GmbH in Neuwied has been a leader in producing high-quality steel sheets for the automotive and supply industries. The photovoltaic project in Neuwied also aligns with the company’s goals: by 2030, ArcelorMittal aims to reduce CO2 emissions in Europe by 35%.

As Felix Kerk, COO of SSC Germany, notes: "In a rapidly evolving steel market that is transitioning towards CO2 neutrality, we are embracing our responsibility as a processing facility by minimizing our carbon footprint through local initiatives. Our goal is to be fully climate-neutral in Neuwied by 2030."

This new photovoltaic system is the start of an exciting partnership between ArcelorMittal and ENVERIO, helps us to secure an environmentally responsible, safe, and cost-effective energy supply. We look forward to further collaborations in the future, where we will continue to balance sustainability and profitability, driving us forward in the energy transition.
